Basic
I can understand and use very basic everyday expressions phrases, such as: personal introductions (name, nationality, language spoken), say where I live and my profession. Even if with very limited vocabulary, I can also go shopping, get directions, and interact with others using single statements or questions. I can read and write only short notes and signs. I can use 1-2 verb tenses well.
Pre-Intermediate
I can start to understand and participate in conversations about everyday topics (e.g. family, hobbies, work, travel, and current events). I can easily start connecting sentences together to start a conversation, but I can't yet carry on a conversation with a lot of details. I'm now able to use all basic verb tenses of the language.
Intermediate
I'm confident about starting basic conversations and deal comfortably with most common situations while I'm traveling (dining in a restaurant, booking a hotel room, or a plane ticket, commuting, and basic social activities). I can start describing experiences, events, and express my wishes. My grammar knowledge allows me to speak about scenarios that would be possible, wishes, and plans.
Upper-Intermediate
I can carry out conversations on topics I'm familiar with, describing concrete and abstract scenarios. I can interact with native speakers well, being able to hold complete and detailed conversations about topics I enjoy. I can understand written or broadcast news (TV and radio). I'm familiar with and able to use all of the verb tenses of the language.
Advanced
I can express myself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. I can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. My reading and writing skills allow me to build complex reports and essays with details using technical vocabulary of my field of interest. and showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
Proficient
I can understand with ease almost everything heard or read, summarize information from different spoken and written sources, giving summaries and accounts in a coherent presentation. I can express myself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.
